Past Mouse Pads
In the past, a mouse pad was necessarily required to use a computer mouse. Because the first mice used a small hard rubber ball that would roll as the mouse moved. This would allow the mechanism that sends signals to the computer to move more easily by applying a certain resistance to the mouse ball, which represents the distance moved. Computer software used this data from a mechanical sensor to move the mouse pointer over the computer monitor and screen. So a mouse pad was needed to provide a surface that the rubber ball could hold to move.
